AM: Selective mutism: Why won’t they talk?

Selective mutism occurs when an individual is capable of speaking and is verbal in at least one setting, but refuses to talk in public situations.Onset during preschool years usually masks an underlying communication problem. This presentation will explain disorder characteristics and provide video examples to illustrate a desensitization treatment approach to address the disorder.

PM: developmental syndrome disorders; What are they and what do I do?

Children with syndromes present significant challenges including communication disorders, hearing loss, motor disabilities and cognitive disorders. This workshop will identify key characteristics, hereditary patterns, identifying features, and treatment options for a variety of childhood syndromes. Lecture information will be highlighted with videos, pictures, and illustrations of particular syndrome disorders. Syndromes to be covered include the following: Rett, Fragile X, Williams, Angelma11, Prader-Willi, Tourette's, Femi Alcohol, Down, and Usher Syndrome.

Episodic, Prospective, Procedural, Semantic … Models of Memory in Acquired Brain Injury & Assessment for the SLP across settings

(for Friday and Saturday): The speech-language pathologist plays an important role in the interdisciplinary rehabilitation of adults following acquired brain injury. The SLP is charged with assessment and management of cognitive-communication challenges after acquired brain injury, but many SLPs may not have received in-depth training in cognitive rehabilitation approaches. Fundamental to approaching effective, evidence-based cognitive rehabilitation practices is a sound understanding of the neurological and neuropsychological underpinnings that support cognitive-communication abilities, especially memory systems. We will explore models of memory in relation to acquired brain injuries (ABI) in adults, discuss standardized and informal assessment measures across the continuum of care, and learn about best practices to support memory functioning following ABIundefinedincluding spaced retrieval, external aids, and metacognitive strategies.

Re-writing the Pediatric Assessment and Therapy Story

From dynamic assessment to dynamic treatment. Her presentations provide evidence-based approaches that can be utilized with pre-school through high school age children.

Marie Ireland works for the Virginia Department of Education as an educational specialist for Speech Language Pathology. She provides professional development throughout the nation focusing on child language, evidence-based practice, comprehensive evaluation, dynamic assessment and the impact of socio-economic, cultural and linguistic differences.  

Marie has worked in Virginia's public schools as a speech-language pathologist at the pre-K, elementary and secondary level.  Recent awards include the 2013 ASHA Editor's award for Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools, Speech-Language Hearing Association Fellow, Virginia Council of Administrators in Special Education (VCASE) Friend of VCASE award.
