FRIDAY October 27, 2017

Dr. Susan Caspari presenting on:

“How to treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech: A Hands-on Workshop for Clinicians”

This 2-day, hands-on workshop will provide clinicians with a solid foundation of knowledge in the assessment and treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS).  The session is hinged on the idea of understanding CAS as a ‘movement disorder’ rather than a ‘sound-based’ disorder.   On day 1, participants will learn how to identify breakdowns in a child’s speech that are indicative of this movement disorder, and will practice how to assess a child for this disorder based on these speech movement breakdowns.  On day 2, clinicians will be provided with an understanding of research-based principles that guide how to practice to improve motor learning.  Clinicians will learn practical treatment methods that employs these principles of motor learning that they can use in every day treatments sessions with children with CAS in order to help them improve their movement gestures for speech.  Video tape examples will be shown throughout the two days to help demonstrate both assessment and treatment procedures.  Hands-on large and small group activities will be utilized throughout the sessions to give participants practice in the assessment and treatment methods discussed.  


BIO:

Sue Caspari is nationally recognized as a leading practitioner in the area of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Throughout her career, Sue has worked extensively with children and adults in a variety of settings including early intervention, private practice and inpatient and outpatient hospital settings, including the Mayo Clinic. Sue has published scholarly articles on CAS, and is regularly invited to conduct workshops and seminars around the country on CAS. Sue has recently joined the faculty of the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department (CSD) at Temple University, where she works as an instructor and as the clinical supervisor of the recently established Childhood Apraxia of Speech Treatment, Learning and Evaluation (CASTLE) Center. Sue is the owner of Caspari and Colleagues, LLC, a group of SLPs dedicated to providing consultation, evaluation and therapy services for children with CAS and other severe speech sound disorders; and the director of an intensive 5-week summer program for children with CAS.

BIO:

Dr. Ellis, CD Program Coordinator, received her doctorate in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Kentucky. She teaches coursework in language intervention, literate language, articulation and phonological disorders, and research methods. Her research interests include language and literacy development and disorders, phonological disorders, and professional issues in speech-language pathology. Dr. Ellis is a former Chair of the Kentucky Licensure Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and President of the Kentucky Speech-Language-Hearing-Association. At present, she is serving as the Chair of ASHA’s Governmental Relations and Public Policy Board.

“Apps as Practical Solutions to Common Cognitive Issues Post-Brain Injury”

BIO:

I am a professor at Coastline Community College and have taught in Coastline's Acquired Brain Injury Program for over 25 years. In addition to teaching cognitive remediation skills to adults with brain injuries, I teach classroom and online computer courses. In creating technology-based compensation strategies for brain injury survivors, I have found the perfect niche to combine my passion for teaching and my fascination with computers.

I've co-authored five books on web design. More recently, I've created a series of workbooks related to the use of a smart mobile device (such as a smartphone, iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch) as a memory and cognitive prosthetic device. I've also created a Web site that allows individuals with brain injuries and other cognitive challenges—and professionals who work with them—to read and post reviews of apps they find particularly useful for work, home, and school.

Join us Friday afternoon for a welcome reception.  The social will be held in the Vendor and Silent Auction room at the Sheraton.  Additionally, throughout the convention, there will be a silent auction with items generously donated by local businesses and corporate supporters.

“The Effects of Alcohol & Drugs On Executive Function & Language Development” 

Children who experience stress, trauma, and exposure to drugs & alcohol in utero and early infancy, as well as those who are abused/neglected as they grow up are at a higher risk for deficiencies in language skills due to brain dysfunction or lack of adequate stimulation. Participants will learn about the impact of pre-, peri- and neonatal conditions on the development of specific language impairment. Implications for assessment and treatment will be discussed, specifically in the areas of executive function skills and social skills.


PM Session

“Selective Mutism”

Is your student just shy or is there something more going on? As speech-language pathologists, we play a crucial role in the assessment and treatment of students with Selective Mutism (SM), a disorder facing 1 in every 100 elementary school children. To effectively do this, we must first understand the nature of SM; its potential causes, common characteristics, and associated disorders. This presentation will summarize the most recent research on SM as it relates to general understanding of the disorder, assessment, and treatment. You will learn what your role is in the assessment and treatment processes. Specific techniques and strategies will be discussed so that you can hit the ground running when you meet your next student with SM.


BIO:

Jane joined the Speech Pathology Group team in 2001, when she relocated to California with her husband and daughter, after living in eight different states! Jane has been providing speech and language services for SDC and general education students in the Fairfield- Suisun Unified School District of California for the last 12 years at one of the district’s elementary sites. Her extensive background consisting of 35 years of clinical and supervisory experience in a variety of settings (clinics, hospitals and rehab centers) has contributed to her clinical expertise in treating and diagnosing a wide range of disorders. Jane is often asked to evaluate or consult on many of the district’s complex cases, which is a true testament to her longevity in the district and well-earned respect. Jane is looking forward to working with and supporting all the wonderful school-based SPG therapists as she assumes additional clinical supervision responsibilities. She will also participate in SPG’s professional development program as a “new” presenter and contributor to our workshop topics.

Eileen Crowe presenting on:

“Support Personnel-Training, Trends, and Regulation”

Examine trends in the states relating to the laws and regulations governing support personnel, their evolving role, and on-line resources available on the roles and supervision of both audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel. Through scenarios, attendees will explore the impact of support personnel in various practice settings.

“ASHA’s Performance Assessment of Contributions and Effectiveness of SLPs”

The goal in developing an assessment system for educational professionals is to identify performance measures that accurately assess their impact on student performance. While much emphasis has been placed on evaluating the contributions of classroom teachers, very little attention has been paid to the contributions of other school professionals including SLPs. This presentation will focus on ASHA's Performance Assessment of the Contributions and Effectiveness of SLPs (PACE) which consists of the development of a portfolio based on the PACE Matrix, classroom observation, self-assessment and the PACE Matrix. The Matrix consists of nine objective evaluation areas which the evaluator and the SLP use to gauge performance and inform the creation of a professional development plan. ASHA’s PACE has been adopted and adapted by several states and school districts and is an appropriate alternative to the VAA systems developed and used by states and local school districts. A modified self-assessment exercise and a group activity using the PACE Matrix will be included, as will a discussion of strategies to get PACE adopted in the state and local school districts.

BIO:

Eileen Crowe is the Director for State Association Relations at ASHA.  She is responsible for providing assistance and support on legislative, regulatory, and administrative issues to the Western region of state speech-language-hearing associations.  She also oversees the State Education Advocacy Leader’s network and serves as the ex-officio to ASHA’s Joint Committee on State-National Association Relationships.  Eileen has presented in numerous venues nationwide on advocacy and legislative and regulatory issues along with having developed an extensive array of materials to assist the professions in these areas.  Eileen is also a trained facilitator and strategic planner.  Prior to joining ASHA, she spent four years with the Maryland General Assembly as a legislative analyst for the House Commerce and Government Matters Committee and under the Department of Legislative Services, Research Division.  Eileen received her BA in political science and her master’s degree in public administration from Louisiana State University.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

All cancellations and refunds will be processed after the convention.  Full refunds will be made only if a written cancellation request is received two (2) weeks prior to the convention (by October 13, 2017).  After October 13, 2017, refunds will be considered by the board on a case by case basis.
